I cover the Black Country, Birmingham, Shropshire and beyond and have exhibited at the RBSA Gallery, The New Art Gallery in Walsall and even the Houses of Parliament.

Urban Freedom/Wounded, Acrylic on Canvas, 2025

Urban Freedom/Wounded (detail), Acrylic on Canvas, 2025

My latest painting, Urban Freedom/Wounded), is based upon a strange coincidence of events.

A few yrs ago, at the BBC 6 Music Festival in Manchester, I got talking to a member of the local choir who were singing with Young Fathers. She was telling us how she looked after injured wild birds (pigeons, gulls etc) & brought them back to health. I always thought I’d like to paint this idea at some point.

Then, earlier this year, I painted a skeletal blackbird to highlight their plight due to global warming.

Shortly after this, I was driving through Wolverhampton when I saw a woman carrying a wounded blackbird & making her way through the crowds. It was surreal & dreamlike – so much so, I wasn’t even sure if it had happened. But it had. And that’s why I felt I had to create this painting.

During the weeks I was working on this piece, events in the UK took a sinister turn with St George’s Cross flags appearing overnight in many towns and cities, mine included. This was followed by the Raise the Colours gathering in London, organised by far-right campaigner, Tommy Robinson (aka Stephen Yaxley-Lennon) and other extremist groups.

Both these events seemed to represent a shift in the atmosphere of this country, with the flags and subsequent demonstration intended to make people of colour (or anyone who didn’t fit in with the far-right narrative) feel intimidated and unwelcome.

Therefore, as I was painting the crowds behind the main figure of the woman and the blackbird, the figures behind subconsciously came to represent these neo-fascist gatherings and created a slight air of menace in my composition. In other words, the main subject now came to represent anyone who doesn’t subscribe to the racism which seems to flow through our streets like an open sewer.

It’s hard to say what the future holds for this country, but as an artist, it’s hard not to respond in some way to what’s going on.

Digital Nerves, Acrylic on Canvas Paper, 2025, A2 (Diptych)

I created this painting to explore the influence of technology upon our lives. I wanted to examine the effects it can have upon our psyche. Many of us practically live on our smartphones. We are often willingly subjected to a 24-7 barrage of information and misinformation.

We’ve already seen how social media has influenced seismic political events. These include events such as Brexit or Trump. How does this affect us as individuals in the long term? I wanted the man and woman to have a vacant look, as if their minds were elsewhere.

Then, I used medical illustrations of the facial nervous system as a reference. I introduced areas of luminous pink and green. These colors reference phone screens, TVs, and computer screens. Upon this, I added layers of darker tones, which I scraped through to reveal the brighter colours beneath.

Finally, I added the icons at the bottom. These icons are based on smartphone OS icons. They are intended to symbolise the ever-decreasing gap between what happens in real life and online.

Prints of this painting are now available in my shop.

Viral Blackbird, Burning Sky, Acrylic on Paper, 2025, A3

I was inspired to create this painting after reading about the plight of blackbirds in southeast England. This much-loved garden bird has been the topic of folklore and culture for centuries. It’s inspired countless nursery rhymes, stories and popular music, like the Beatles song of the same name.

Now, though, the mosquito-borne Usutu virus is wiping out the blackbird population at an alarming rate. It has been doing so since it was first detected in the UK in 2020.

According to research, the virus originated in South Africa and has existed in mainland Europe for around 30 years. It has spread because native mosquitoes in the UK can now survive the milder winters. This situation has been linked to climate change.

This painting started out as a straightforward painting of a blackbird in a field. However, I soon decided to give it a darker, more Gothic look. I studied photographs and anatomical drawings of bird skeletons to add the ghostly-looking bones beneath. I wanted this to have the look of an X-ray.

This was done to symbolise the precarious balance between life and death. Hopefully, it highlights the very real plight affecting these beautiful birds. It also reminds us that we could so easily lose them.

I added the burning sky in reference to global warming and the climate crisis affecting us all. For reference, I painted from photos of wildfires which have sadly become increasingly frequent in recent years.

The original painting and prints are available to buy right here.

Battle Between Life and Death/Boxing Hares

Boxing Hares have been linked with the arrival of spring for centuries. In this watercolour, I wanted to explore the folklore behind these mysterious creatures. In my painting, a live hare battles its skeletal, wintry counterpart. This shows the changing of one season into the other and reminds us that everything is transient.

I create portraits in oils, acrylics and watercolours, usually working from a combination of photos and sittings with the subject. Why not commission me to create a unique portrait for your walls?

portrait art drawings

I also create portraits in charcoal and pencil. As with my paintings, I usually work from a combination of photos and sittings with the subject. Why not commission me to create a unique portrait drawing for your walls?

landscape paintings and drawings

When I’m not painting or drawing portraits, I also like to capture important events (such as the Crooked House in Himley and the Polinations event in Birmingham) or simply celebrate the beauty of nature and architecture. Would you like a unique painting or drawing of your favourite place or holiday destination?

DIGITAL ART

I also produce work digitally using my iPad and software such as Procreate, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Fresco. Recently, I’ve been working on a series of sketches dedicated to the people of Ukraine and their pets – why not take a closer look at these in my gallery?
